Introduction
Yo, what’s up guys? This is David Hoang coming at you from supplementssuperhero.com and today I’m going to be doing a South Beach Diet review.
I’m going to be explaining what it is, some of the benefits of the South Beach Diet, as well as some of the disadvantages the South Beach Diet.
I did a little bit of research on the diet, because it’s a pretty popular fad diet. Lots of people are doing it, lots of people are purchasing the product online.
So, I just wanted to cover some of the facts with you and share with you some of my personal opinions and what it is.
What is the South Beach Diet?
It’s a diet that was developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston and he promoted it in his book, the South Beach Diet, which came out back in 2013.
Pretty old, but it’s been around for a really, really, really long time.
The focus of the diet is that it essentially eliminates starches and foods that are high in carbs like rice or white potatoes…white bread.
And, it promotes eating foods that are high in fiber and also foods that are low glycemic, meaning that they don’t spike your blood sugar.
And, focusing on healthy carbs like vegetables and fruits, eating some lean protein, and recommends unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, and avoiding trans fats and avoiding saturated fats.
Essentially, the goal, what the South Beach Diet is, to instead of focusing on bad carbs and bad fats, to instead focus on good carbs and good fats. So, just overall good, healthy eating.
The recommendation is three main meals per day along with two snacks per day, so pretty standard diet, and there’s no calorie restrictions to it.
They essentially develop a diet and put it into three phases that you follow through.
And essentially as you progress through these three phases, the diet allows more and more carbs to be introduced.
For example, stage one, it essentially eliminates simple carbohydrates and sugars, so really no carbohydrates, no simple carbohydrates in stage one.
And then stage two, it reintroduces you to some carbohydrates and allows you a little bit more carbs into the diet so it allows you to eat more fruits and allows you to eat more vegetables and some whole grains.
And then stage three, you become a lot more free. You can eat with no restrictions and you essentially can eat whatever you want, but really apply the principles that you’ve learned.
And so, you essentially choose your food wisely and really eliminate a lot. I should say…I can’t talk today… Really limit the amount of simple carbohydrates you intake and eliminate the amount of bad fats that you’re intaking.
But, you have a lot more freedom in stage three because you’ve developed a lot of those good habits in stage one and stage two, and they consider that stage one phase really the stage where you can lose a good amount of weight because you’ve eliminated those simple carbs.
In addition, those are the basic principles behind the South Beach Diet, but now they’ve evolved into various online programs.
They’ve got cookbooks for sale, and they’ve got even pre-packaged food that you can order online, and the prices vary from about $10-plus, to about $13-plus per day, which equates to about $300 to $400-plus per month, which, in the grand scheme of things, is not that expensive, especially if you’re already trying to eat healthy and you’re trying to cook a lot of frozen meals at home.
South Beach Diet Benefits
Okay. So, benefits of the South Beach Diet.
Now, I would say one, it’s a very healthy overall approach to nutrition. I mean, it’s kind of common sense, but the South Beach Diet essentially provides a lot of good diet…good guidance towards healthy eating.
I mean, I think overall, it’s great for long-term health benefits.
I would say it’s a good way to prevent spikes in sugar because it essentially restricts you or prevents you from really taking in sugars or taking in those simple carbohydrates. And instead taking in some of those complex carbohydrates and really good carbs like vegetables and fruits.
It’s a decent way to lose weight, especially during phase one.
I wouldn’t say like it’s an absolute amazing way to lose weight or to lose weight extremely, extremely quickly, but I would say it’s good especially for long-term weight loss.
And if you do it correctly, it really is good for long-term weight maintenance.
What’s really cool about the diet is you don’t have to worry about counting calories because counting calories for a lot of people..it really sucks and a lot of people really hate caloric restrictions and this is great for those people.
And also, if you love carbs, you’re going to love this diet. Now, initially it’s not, especially during phase one, I mean you’re not going to love the diet, but as you progress into phase two…phase three…you can have a little bit more flexibility when it comes to your carbs.
Dr. Agatston really doesn’t categorize this as a low carb diet.
He really didn’t want this to be like a repeated Atkins Diet, but he wanted it to be more flexible, more flexible, and essentially enable you to have carbs and have healthy carbs in your diet.
Cons of the South Beach Diet
Now with that being said, there are obvious disadvantages of the South Beach Diet.
One, and I’m not 100% certain about this, but a lot of people do criticize the claims that are made within the book.
I didn’t read the book so I can’t really say too much to like the actual claims that the book makes.
Some say that the claims are pretty exaggerated in the book and there’s not a ton of scientific evidence behind some of the claims that they make, so keep that in mind.
Some say that within the book itself, there are some scientific inaccuracies. Again, you’ll have to read the book and figure that out for yourself.
It also may not be the fastest way to lose weight, in my opinion. I would say it’s great for long-term health benefits and long-term weight maintenance.
If you’re that person, you’re not in a rush to lose weight. You don’t want to lose 50 pounds this year, but gradually over time you want to develop a healthy diet and have a healthy diet to follow throughout the rest of your life.This is good for that but not necessarily the best if you want to lose a ton of weight within the next three months.
Also, I would say stage three might give people a little too much freedom which may result in downgrading back to bad eating habits.
Whereas maybe other diets like the Keto Diet or like the Atkins Diet or other diets out on the market, I think are going to be a bit more effective when it comes to more rapid weight loss at the beginning.
Stage three does, I think, in this particular diet gives people a little too much leeway and also some of the programs that they sell online might be a little bit too expensive for some.
Other diets I think are going to be pretty cheap, pretty easy to follow, and they don’t have like these expensive prepackaged foods that’s designed for you to buy.
I would say this is great if money’s not a problem for you and you’re okay with investing in your health and you’re okay with taking some of your disposable income and investing it into your diet.
This is a really, really great program for those people who have tons of disposable income and are okay with like investing and really paying for convenience.
For some people…you may not have that option. You may not have tons of disposable income, you might not have an extra 300, 400 bucks lying around to pay for food so that you can lose weight over time.
